Guest Post: Styling Maternity Wear for the Summer

** Guest Post **

While we’ve all heard the popular saying about eating for two, no one ever mentions the need to dress for two while you’re pregnant. And as many times as you might vow not to let a growing belly keep you from wearing your favorite styles, there’s no denying that it’s often a struggle finding maternity wear that makes you look and feel good. Throw in unpredictable pregnancy hormones, a few (okay—maybe more than a few) extra pounds, and summer’s heat, and you’ve got the additional obstacle of choosing clothing that’ll also keep you cool. As the mercury rises, here are a few chic and easy tips for dressing your baby bump in the summer months ahead.

The Maxi Dress + Chambray Button-Up

Feminine, versatile, and always on-trend, it’s no wonder the maxi dress is a summer staple for all ladies—pregnant or not. Flattering on every body type, The Bump notes that the floor-length style is the perfect way to keep stylish and cool during the sweltering summer months. Plus, any pre-maternity maxis that you have hanging in your closet could work—even into your second trimester—as long as they aren’t nipped in at the waist (go with empire styles instead).

And to add to the list of reasons why the maxi dress is a must-have for any mom-to-be, the staple is ideal for work, too. If you're on the hunt for the perfect nine-to-five look, Lyst recommends a casual number in a solid-hued jersey knit for modern office style. Pair your maxi with a blazer for extra polish, or a lightweight cardigan or chambray button-up for a more casual finish.

Tank Top + Denim Overalls

On top of being back in a big way for the summer season, denim overalls are incredibly versatile. And as Fashion Gum writes, they'll suit any body shape or size, making them an instant staple of your warm-weather maternity wardrobe. To keep things cool (and on-trend), choose a cropped style that features a vintage wash and relaxed fit. The faded wash creates a soft, lived-in look while the extra give that a relaxed silhouette provides is perfect for growing with you during your pregnancy. From there, pair with a basic tank top or cotton tee and finish with strappy sandals or woven huarache flats. If you want to take your denim overalls to the next level, wear with a pretty silk blouse and—if you’re up to it—comfortable (we cannot stress this enough) wedges or a chunky heel.

Jersey Dress + Sneakers

The fitted jersey dress not only keeps you cool thanks to its breathable knit material, it also highlights your growing belly. After all, as Babble points out, if there’s one time you can get away with a dress hugging every single curve, it’s during pregnancy. Ideal for casual outdoor get-togethers or a lazy afternoon spent relaxing, the jersey dress pairs particularly well with sneakers—crisp white kicks and slip-on styles are incredibly popular for summer—that are more comfortable than flats or sandals when it comes to swollen feet. The one caveat to this ensemble? If you’re repurposing a non-maternity jersey dress you already have in your wardrobe, make sure the hemline doesn’t become too short with your expanding midsection. And if it is too far into the mini hemline territory, simply pair with leggings for a quick fix.

Broadway and Baseball and Birthdays, Oh My!

I have been very MIA around these parts and thought I'd play a little bit of catch up.  I'm about 35 weeks pregnant now and work has been keeping me so incredibly busy...like trial after trial busy which is why I've been absent from posting.  In the time I've been away on a blog break, lots of great things happened:

1. My cousins are taking over the world...really.

In one week, one cousin was drafted to play major league baseball for the Minnesota Twins (and he's only 17!) and the other cousin's Broadway show, Hamilton, swept up the Tony Awards.  I'm always proud to be a Miranda but that week was quite the proud moment.  I hope that my babies got some of these amazing Miranda genes since they seemed to have skipped me!  I can't play baseball to save my life and definitely can't carry a tune so I'm happy that these two are making Miranda a household name :-)

2.  Those Disney nights...

Another Disney weekend trip happened before I, unfortunately, have to retire Disney for the summer.  Crowds, heat, miles of walking, and full term pregnant just isn't a good mix for the parks right now!  But how beautiful is the Disney Boardwalk?!

3. Another year older...

I celebrated another birthday, another year older, recently which meant that the hubby and I got to go on a date night.  We enjoyed tapas, no tinis this year, at a favorite restaurant and had a great time just the two of us toddler-free!

4.  The Boys Club...

Lucas is such a daddy's boy and if he dada isn't within eyesight he'll run around the house yelling "I FIND DADA RIGHT NOW!"  Well, ok.  It's adorable and I can't wait to see what kind of big brother he will be in a few weeks!

Another Birthday Gift Guide

Another birthday, another year where I can't remember how old I'll be.  Seriously, I had to ask my husband.  I think once you get to the point where you can't remember your own age, you are too old to be making a birthday gift guide; however, should I decide to buy myself something nice, the items below are things that have caught my eye.  But let's be honest, what I really want is to sleep in and eat Nutella all day.  Just being honest.

What I Wore to Work Work Work Work Work

Ooof, it's getting harder and harder to wake up early in the morning and even more difficult to move even a finger but I'm in the homestretch and can see the light at the end of the tunnel.  I've been scarily and dangerously risking a wardrobe malfunction by wearing non maternity tops to work but I think my time to get away with it is way way over so I'll probably be repeating outfits.  Here are a few outfits I wore to work recently that tested gravity...

Baby Shower for Baby #2

On Saturday, my mom threw us a beautiful baby shower for our baby girl and it was every bit of sugar and spice I could have ever dreamed of!  We are so blessed with a great family and friends that came to celebrate with us.  We had a great time and baby girl definitely got spoiled!

I'm 32 weeks now and this pregnancy has been flying by that I get moments of wanting to savor every moment and feelings of sadness when I realize that Lucas will no longer be the baby.  Hormones are a crazy thing and mine are definitely giving me the run around.  Our world is about to get a little wild but that just makes life more interesting, right?

Girly Dress

I remember much of my pregnancy with Lucas was spent in dresses and rarely in pants.  This time around, I rarely have worn dresses and have opted for flowy tunics and leggings.  This dress is probably one of three maternity items I purchased this entire pregnancy and I love it!  It's not something that I can wear every week but I had to buy it when I saw that Old Navy also made a baby girl romper in the same print.  Yep, I'm going to be that mom that wears a matching outfit with my daughter and I couldn't be more thrilled...her...probably not so much!
