Short Hair Inspiration

I've been feeling so blah about my hair lately so I made an appointment to revamp this lifeless hair on Saturday.  Much to my younger self's dismay, I now prefer to have short hair and have been scouring Pinterest for inspiration.  I'm never sure if it is rude to show your hair stylist inspiration pics but I've been looking so I have an idea of what I want.  Here's the thing, I want a hairstyle that will make me want to do my hair in the morning (not throwing it in a ponytail) and easily since I rarely give myself more than twenty minutes to get ready in the morning mmmkay?  Here's to hoping.

  2. Greetings D&D - First, you should not have any issues bringing photos to your hairstylist. Use whatever tools you need to convey your thoughts and ideas. Vague directives such as "I want an easy style" are not very helpful. You need to be specific with how many inches you want cut off, if you want it angled toward the front, how many inches to go up for layers, etc. Have the stylist repeat the instructions back to you. Have them show you how much they will take off, how they will do the layers, etc. _before_ they cut anything. Pay attention to what they are doing and don’t get caught up in small talk. You will have a vision in your head of how you want your hair to look, and they will have a vision, and you need to do everything you can to make sure the visions align. It’s your money and you want to make sure you spend it well. Second, have a realistic understanding of what your inspiration photos convey. The Sandra Bullock and Olivia Palermo photos show mostly blunt cuts with little to no layers. The styles are super smooth, so they (or their hairstylist) probably did a blowout followed by a straightening iron. And there is some product in there. The four photos on the bottom are all layered cuts that will require daily styling with a blow dryer to get them to look that way. This may not work with your limited “get ready” time in the morning. The cuts may also not look that way depending on your hair's thickness and natural state of pin straight, wavy, or curly. I've had the Heidi Klum haircut and it never really looks like that because my hair has a lot of natural wave to it (not in a good way). I get an approximation, but I have yet to achieve total Heidi-ness. I TOTALLY get the “If I put my hair in one more ponytail I’m going to scream . . . “ thoughts, but I’m now aiming for the Olivia Palermo blunt cut . . . ultimately it’s just easier. Third, you may want to consider bangs or a color treatment to change things up. A small amount of side-swept bangs make a lot of difference – if you avoid a heavy bang, you can easily grow them out if you don’t like the look. A demi-permanent color treatment or highlights could also punch up your hairstyle. See what your salon offers – demi-permanent color washes out after about a month, so you can experiment without a lot of commitment or shelling out a lot of money for upkeep. Good luck! Jennifer

    1. Thank you so much for this! I'm definitely going to reconsider getting the pictures below because of my limited time in the mornings. I really love Olivia's cut and thinking of that but shorter. I definitely need a change because I'm just so sick of ponytails and the way I do it just doesn't seem professional for the office. Thank you again for your advice!

  4. Greetings D&D - I don't mean to come off like the Haircut Police . . . I'm always hopeful for a reality-show makeover experience, but it never seems to go like that. That said, your hairstylist may have some really helpful ideas. I think you would look super-cute with a couple inches off to make a face-framing chin-length bob. You will need a few layers for movement, otherwise your hair will look a triangle. Google and Pinterest have lots of shots of these types of hairstyles from front, back, and side angles so you can get a feel for the overall shape. If you don't like it, it won't be too painful to grow out. Or maybe you will love it and go Pixie next time (change is good)! Sending good thoughts for a great cut, and be sure to post a photo! Jennifer
